Major Strides Ohio Has Taken in Improving Education in our State |
|
|
|
|
Dear Constituents,
As autumn approaches and children head back to school, it is a good time to reflect on the major strides Ohio has taken toward improving education in our state. While other states have responded to the recession by slashing education funding, Ohio has protected school funding. We’ve done so because the key to lasting economic growth is to better prepare our children for the new kinds of jobs the 21st-Century economy is creating.
Here are some of the most significant reforms Ohio has made:
Modernizing Ohio Classrooms – Aligns Ohio's academic standards to international benchmarks and incorporates creativity and innovation into the classrooms, while strengthening the core subjects.
Expanding Learning Opportunities – Provides more learning opportunities by establishing all-day kindergarten, gradually expanding the school year, and expanding the learning day with additional activities, community service and wellness programs.
Increasing School District Accountability and Transparency – Establishes a new level of school district accountability and transparency to local taxpayers. The
Department of Education will work with districts to ensure they're in compliance with standards and help them make necessary improvements.
Establishing a Constitutional Funding System and Reducing the Reliance on Local Taxpayers – Uses research and best practices to determine the components for student success, then drives resources to districts based on those findings.
Our children are our future, and my colleagues and I in the Ohio House continue to work to ensure they get the best possible education. Earlier in the general assembly, I sponsored legislation to achieve just that: House Bill 316 will require that if a school district offers any type of sexual health education, then it must be comprehensive, medically accurate, age appropriate, and abstinence inclusive. If a parent objects to the instruction, the bill gives them the right to opt out their child.
I have entitled this legislation the Act for Our Children’s Future because I believe it is vital to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their sexual and reproductive health, defend against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and encourage Ohio’s youth to develop responsible decision-making skills for a successful future. Our children’s health and futures are too important to put at risk by not giving them the tools they need to protect themselves.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me. I always welcome your thoughts, concerns and questions.
Sincerely,
Stephen Slesnick State Representative

Rep. Slesnick Announces Funds for Local Renovation Project
$23,900 State Dollars to Reestablish Canton Jewish Women’s Center
COLUMBUS – State Representative Stephen D. Slesnick (D-Canton) announced today that the state will provide $23, 900 towards the renovation of the Canton Jewish Women’s Center. The Center provides a variety of educational and cultural activities and programs for the community.
“These state dollars will help make this project a reality, creating a welcoming place for area events,” said Rep. Slesnick. “The Canton Jewish Women’s Center will be an integral part of the local Jewish community, and the new location is ideal for a gathering place that can bring the Jewish community and all of Stark County together.”
The Women’s Center is part of the Canton Jewish Community Center, a United Way agency. The grant will go to the Canton Jewish Community Federation, the parent organization for both centers.
The Canton Jewish Community Center is relocating to a vacant wing at the Shaaray Torah Synagogue on Thirtieth Street North West in Canton. This renovation project will re-establish the Canton Jewish Women’s Center, which will serve as an open space for organizational meetings, educational presentations, committee gatherings, and special events for the entire Stark County community.
Rep. Slesnick worked closely with Ed Buxbaum, CEO of the Canton Jewish Community Federation, Joyce Garver Keller, Executive Director of Ohio Jewish Communities and Canton attorney Robert Friedman to help make this project a reality.
Relocation for the project began on July 15th.

Over 450 High Paying Jobs Expected from First of its Kind Center in Canton
COLUMBUS – State Representative Stephen D. Slesnick (D- Canton) announced that a state grant will help create the Canton Corrugated Paper Center to generate new jobs and promote business in the area. It will be the first facility of its kind in the world.
“I am very impressed by the Center, and have been enthusiastic about it from the beginning,” said Rep. Slesnick. “This grant is great news for the City of Canton, and the project will be a significant asset to the district. It will result in many new employment opportunities over the next few years, and sends a great message to businesses who are considering relocating to Canton. It is exactly the type of economic development that I have championed as a state Representative and will continue to push for in the future.”
The Stark County Port Authority will receive the $750,000 grant. It was one of 14 applicants across the state to be awarded the Ohio Job Ready Sites Grant through the Ohio Department of Development. The program was created to bolster Ohio’s portfolio of commercially developed sites and attract new and expanding business to the state.
In addition to the grant, the Port Authority has teamed with Kohler Coating to provide an additional $400,000 to implement the pilot plant, which will use advanced technology to make corrugated cardboard packaging.
The project is also collaborating with Stark State College of Technology to start a new training program for the corrugating facility, which will establish a customized curriculum for future trainees. Over the next five years, the project is expected to lead to over 450 high paying jobs in the area.
